Doris KeslerDoris Kesler, 92, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, of natural causes at her home on Winona Lake.

On Dec. 18, 1922, she was born in Warsaw, to Arden and Pauline (Wood) Kincaide. She was united in marriage to Robert Haimbaugh Kesler in 1946, who preceded her in death on Nov. 1, 2003.

Kesler retired, from Warsaw Community Schools Central Administration Office, in 1986. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Warsaw and attended Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of Tri Kappa Sorority and precinct committee woman for the Republican Party.

She is survived by two children, Susan (and spouse James) Wagner, Plymouth and Stephen (and spouse Kim) Kesler, Warsaw; 10 grandchildren, Scott (and spouse Katrina) Wagner, Julie Wagner (and spouse Chad) Schwietert, Kirsten Fatchett, Cole (and spouse Megan) Fatchett, Rob (and spouse Bethany) Kesler, Ross (and spouse Kristen) Kesler, Kara (and spouse Wes) Whisler, Kyla (and spouse Wesley) Snoddy, Kandi Kesler and Rhett Kesler. She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, Vaughn Schwietert, Griffin Schwietert, Adelyn Wagner, Palmer Wagner, Nolan Kesler, Serina Kesler, Charlotte Kesler, Knox Kesler, Violet Kesler, Nova Snoddy, Isabelle Snoddy, Gwyn Whisler, Molly Whisler, Vivyan Whisler and Maddox Fatchett.

Kesler was also preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Fatchett.

As a lifelong resident of Warsaw, Kesler was proud of her roots and proud of her city. Kesler loved people. When she was working for the school corporation she knew everyone and everyone knew her. Her kind heart and giving spirit made her a favorite. When she was growing up it was her grandmother who took her to church and Sunday school every Sunday to establish what became a lifetime of of faith and service for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She loved to study the Bible and was always excited when she learned new things. In recent days she became very thrilled and interested in her future home in heaven with the Lord, and she joyfully looked forward to being reunited with her beloved husband Bob, her daughter Nancy and other loved ones who had gone on before.

She personified the person with “an attitude of gratitude.” She was a woman of grit. Her endurance and stamina were amazing. She did have some difficult circumstances in her life. Yet she always rose above circumstances. Depending upon the Lord, and continuing to do good to others,Kesler lived a glowing an amazing life. She would talk of “the miracle of 1982,” which was when she and Bob mortgaged their house to buy the van chassis and materials to build the first Explorer conversion van.

She always considered it to be a special gift from God that the Lord opened the door for that business enterprise to grow and to become one of the major companies in this area. She explained that she thanked the Lord every day for that miracle, and every day she would also pray with thanksgiving for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also very generous. She knew that all of the blessings she enjoyed were from the Lord and she was quick to share and assist others. She was a dog lover. She and Bob always had a dog, and after Bob was gone, Kesler continued to have her dog as a faithful companion. She contributed generously to the Kosciusko County Animal Shelter.

Even in her 90s Kesler lived life large and was so active and engaged in life that her lifestyle and activities were like those of someone in their 50s and 60s. She was an avid golfer and her golf game did not slow down until she was in her upper 80s. She was sharp as a tack until her last breath. Doris had many friends in Indiana and in Florida. She enjoyed getting together for family holidays, festivities, sporting events, games, bridge and other social gatherings.

She embodied the saying, “If you want a friend, then be a friend.” Because of her winsome personality and the genuineness of her caring heart, people were always drawn to Doris and everyone always liked her. In the center of her heart was her deep love of her family she enjoyed sharing the latest pictures of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She particularly enjoyed the technology of sharing over the Internet through email, and with her iPad. She knew that many things in this life ultimately are of little consequence. But she always knew that family really counts. All in her family were made to be better people because of Kesler and her love

Kesler was engaged in what was going on in the nation and the world. In fact, she could not even understand those who were unaware of current events or did not seem to care about the well-being of America. She was indeed a staunch Republican, but it was more than that. She was a conservative Republican. She did not compromise her conservative political beliefs, and it definitely bothered her when national or local politicians would forget their conservative roots and promises.

Visitation hours will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, in McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, in Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Warsaw with Pastor Denny Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.

Memorial contributions may be made to Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County, 3489 East 100 South, Warsaw, Indiana 46582.

Rebecca R. Hendrix Mychal David Loper

Rebecca R. Hendrix, 25, and Mychal D. Loper, 24, both of 7979 N. 600W, Etna Green, were arrested Saturday. Hendrix was initially charged with theft and Loper was charged with fraud.

However, court records show both face charges of fraud on a financial institution, a level 5 felony; forgery, a level 6 felony; and theft, a class A misdemeanor.

Kosciusko County Detective J.D. Ayres states in an affidavit of probable cause, on Dec. 9, a female reported checks were stolen from a closed Chiphone Federal Credit Union account and there were checks written on that account without her knowledge, permission and/or consent. Hendrix and her boyfriend, Mychal Loper were believed responsible for writing those checks.

Ayres spoke with the manager of Beacon Credit Union who reported several checks had been cashed at that location on a closed account and as a result of the closed account payment was denied to the credit union. Police also spoke to the manager at Chiphone Credit Union who verified the victim’s account was closed on Oct. 14.

Police found three checks written between Nov. 21 and Nov. 24 being written out to Hendrix and allegedly signed by the victim. The checks totaled $680.

The investigation additionally found two checks written on Nov. 24 and Nov. 26, to Loper and signed by the victim. These two checks, totaled $600.

All checks were cashed at Beacon Credit Union.

A surveillance video from the bank verified Loper cashing the checks.

Hendrix and Loper were held on $4,000 surety bond each.

UPDATE: Officer Involved Shooting In Plymouth

The man who was shot by police Monday night has been identified as Lane G. Dogson, 33, Tomahawk Drive, Plymouth. His medical conditions is still unknown.

The Indiana State Police is investigating a shooting that involved two officers and an armed man Monday evening in Plymouth. One of the officers involved in the shooting works for the Plymouth Police Department and the other is a trooper stationed out of the Bremen Post. The state police are heading the investigation.

Around 6:40 p.m. officers working in Marshall County received information from dispatchers that a subject wanted for questioning in a domestic battery case, had been seen in the area of Hoham Drive in Plymouth. Officers were told that the subject was driving a white van and was possibly armed with a gun.

Within minutes of the dispatch, a trooper from the Bremen Post spotted the suspect as he pulled into the KMart parking lot off Oak Road and US 30 in Plymouth. The trooper stopped the driver of the white van and waited briefly for a Plymouth officer to assist.

Both officers approached the man as he sat in his van. After police reached the driver’s side window and spoke with subject briefly, they asked him to get out of the van. Allegedly the man refused and immediately drew a gun raising it at the officers. Both officers opened fire hitting the subject multiple times.

No officers were injured in the shooting.  However, the suspect did sustain serious injury as a result of the police gunfire. He was transported by helicopter to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. His condition is unknown at this time. The subjects name will not be released until immediate members of his family are contacted.

The names of the officers involved in the shooting will be released Wednesday afternoon by the Indiana State Police and by the Plymouth Police Department.

No other information is available at this time. New information will be released as it becomes available. This investigation is being headed by the Indiana State Police.  Please do not contact the Plymouth Police Department for comments or facts surrounding the shooting.

New Fire Station In Planning Stage

A GIS map showing the location of Warsaw/Wayne Township Fire Territory Station 3.

A GIS map showing the location of Warsaw/Wayne Township Fire Territory Station 3.

A desire to deliver equal service to all residents of Warsaw and Wayne Township is becoming a reality.

The Warsaw/Wayne Fire Territory was formed in 2009 and all residents serviced by the fire territory are paying the same tax rate. But response time to the southern part of the township can take up to nine minutes, if a call is in the middle of the night, due to less traffic. This response time doesn’t take into account detours necessary if trains are blocking either of the two tracks running through town.

Should a train be blocking a crossing the response time could go up to 15 minutes. Those minutes could mean the loss of a life or property.

Though construction of Station 3 has no time schedule, the property has been purchased and site work completed. The new station will be built on CR 200S, just off County Farm Road, next to Warsaw Community Church.

WWFT Fire Chief Mike Brubaker stated, “We are still in the planning stages. We have a concept on paper.” A feasibility study will be done to provide a ball park number for the construction cost, staffing and tax impact. The study will also look at traffic and noise impacts.

The new station will not be fancy, yet it will ascetically fit in with the homes in Eagle Crest and the church. “It will be pleasing on the eye and we’ll make sure Eagle Crest (residents) and the church are pleased with the end result,” said Brubaker.

The goal is to have a station with three truck bays to house an engine, eventually a tanker and a reserve engine. There will be also be living quarters (kitchen, living/dining room, bedrooms and laundry room) and storage area. The station will be staffed by three shifts of four individuals working 24 hours on, 48 hours off. This means hiring 12 additional firefighters.

An engine for the station was purchased and has been used as a reserve truck. “There will be enough life in it to get (that station) started,” said Brubaker.

The building of a third station could also mean better insurance rates for residents in the township. Currently, due to requirements from the Insurance Services Organization, residents in the southern portion of the township have a 9 rating, the highest available.

Those in town and within closer response time of the two existing stations have a 4/4y rating, (4 meaning a hydrant is close by and 4y denotes water has to be hauled to the scene) a better opportunity for lower insurance rates. It is speculated with the existence of the third station, those residents will receive the same rating as those elsewhere in the township — a 4y rating.

“We want to provide the same option as someone within the city,” said Brubaker, noting the several minute response time. “To offer that to them we need another station and staffing to get the same coverage.”

The fire department no longer just puts out fires. “Eighty-five to 95 percent of our calls are medical runs,” he said noting firefighters are also basic EMT’s, with a number of firefighters receiving advanced training in technical, high angle, trench, confined space and collapse rescues. “Some day we will have advanced life support engines,” he stated noting that is looking 10 to 15 years away.
