Two Arrested On Burglary Charges

Trevor Alan Wertman Trey Andrew Hall

Trevor Alan Wertman, 19 and Trey Andrew Hall, 20, both of 8280 E. US 30, Pierceton, have been charged with burglary, a level 4 felony and theft, a level 6 felony. Both were arrested Tuesday.

Warsaw Police filed the affidavit of probable cause on Dec. 27. The court document states a homeowner reported between July 24 and 25, someone entered her home and stole a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, controllers for the console, power cords and games.

Police were given a tip that Wertman and Hall had taken the items, valued at $800. Both suspects admitted entering the home with a third individual, while the homeowner was not present.

Both are being held on $6,000 surety bonds.

House Fire On US 6 North Of Syracuse

US 6 syracuse_6278New Paris Fire Department with assistance from Turkey Creek Fire Territory responded to a house fire at approximately 10:15 a.m. today.

The fire was reported at 16640 US 6, Syracuse, between CR 127 and CR 29.

The fire was reportedly contained to the northeast corner of the garage area.

Celebrate Twins’ 90th Birthday

NManchester Twins 90thThe children of Doris (Niccum) Boocher and Dorothy (Niccum) Byers would like to invite family and friends to a 90th birthday celebration from 2 to 5 p.m. Jan. 18 in the Manchester Junior High School auditorium, 404 W. 9th St., North Manchester.

Doris and Dorothy were born Jan. 20, 1925, to Albert and Mary Niccum.

Boocher has five children: Jerry Boocher, Judy Cripe, Allan Boocher, Arden Boocher and Beverly Rice; as well as 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Byers has four children: Doreen Connor, Janel Byers, Dennis Byers and Jo Kerr; as well as eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

No gifts please, but cards are welcome.

Akron Elementary Project Community Meeting

Akron ElementaryPatrons of the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation are encouraged to attend either of two upcoming community meetings to learn about a potential building project at Akron Elementary School.

The first community meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, in the Akron Elementary School Gym. A second community meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, in the Mentone Elementary School Large Group Instruction Room. Both meetings will last approximately one hour.

Each community meeting will feature a presentation on the need for renovation and construction at Akron Elementary School, the multiple options for renovation and construction under consideration, the anticipated cost of each option, and the financial impact of the project.

A tour of the current facility at Akron will follow the January 13th presentation.

City Of Warsaw Hosting Compost Give-Away

COmpost_6218 The City of Warsaw Department of Public Works has scheduled a compost give-away.

The public is invited to bring trailers, dump trucks, pickup trucks and/or small containers between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning Monday, Jan. 5.

The compost site is on West Center Street just inside Boggs Industrial Park. Products included in the free give-away are compost, wood chips and leaves.

City employees will be on site to load these items with Bobcats and loaders.

Officers with the Warsaw Police Department investigated the following incidents:

  • 5:28 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 1100 block Husky Trail Warsaw. Martin’s Supermarket reported the theft of a bottle of vodka.
  • 7:38 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 500 block East Market Street, Warsaw. Officials at the Dollar General Store reported a burglary occurred. A front door was broken out and a sliding glass door to the cigarette case was broken. Cigarettes were the missing.
  • 5:43 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 100 block North Detroit Street, Warsaw. Officials at CVS Pharmacy reported three young white males entered the stole and stole four bottles of alcohol and two bottles of soda.
  • 11:13 p.m. Wednesday, 2500 block East Center Street, Warsaw. Officers responded to call of two dogs locked in a vehicle at a restaurant.

Adams Filing For Clerk-Treasurer Re-Election

Kent AdasKent Adams, town of Winona Lake Clerk-Treasurer, announces he will file as a candidate for re-election in the Republican Primary, May 5.

Adams was elected clerk-treasurer in 2011 and is serving his first term. He is serving his first term.

Adams is a Warsaw native who served 16 years in the Indiana General Assembly retiring from the Senate in 2004 to return back to his home community.

His background includes serving as Kosciusko County Treasurer and a member of the Warsaw Community Schools Board of Trustees. He is a former member of the Grace College Board of Trustees, the Bowen Center for Human Services Board of Directors and is presently a member of Warsaw Rotary.

During his years of public service Adams is described as a pro-family, pro-business fiscal conservative. “We have made a number of improvements int he clerk-treasurer’s office since assuming office for the residents and business with the great history and legacy that is Winona Lake. The door is always open. We have an excellent office staff and take very seriously carrying out the duties and responsibilities in our serving the public trust,” he said.

Intoxicated Driver Hits Police Vehicle

A South Bend man was arrested after he struck an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department police vehicle at 5:10 a.m. Thursday.

Robert FlowersRobert Flowers, South Bend, was taken to the Elkhart County Jail on charges on driving while suspended with prior convictions and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a felony. He was found to have a previous conviction of OWI in July 2011.

Sean Holmes, undersheriff, Chief Deputy with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department reports the accident occurred on Old US 33, west of Nappanee Street in Elkhart.

Flowers was operating a 1996 white Chevrolet Tahoe eastbound on Old US 33, approaching the curve near Nappanee Street.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Officer Bryant Byler, was parked approximately 10-feet off the roadway to the southeast of the curve in a business driveway when Flowers’ vehicle went off the roadway, failing to negotiate the curve. Flowers’ vehicle struck the patrol car causing extensive damage.

Byler attempted to move the squad car out of the path of Flowers’ vehicle, but could not avoid being struck.

Flowers’ vehicle continued eastbound colliding with a signpost and guide wires for an AEP pole before coming to a stop.

Both drivers were not injured.

Winter Weather Advisory Issued

The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has issued a winter weather advisory for snow, sleet and freezing rain from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday.

The winter weather advisory includes: Noble, DeKalb, Stark, Pulaski, Marshall, Fulton, Kosciusko, Whitley, Allen, Defiance, Henry, Paulding and Putnam counties.

The NWS reports a period of snow, sleet and freezing rain will arrive during the late overnight hours and then transition to freezing rain Saturday morning. Temperatures are forecast to climb above freezing by late Saturday morning, changing the precipitation to all rain.

Light ice accumulations of up to a 10th of an inch is possible.

Roads and surfaces may become slippery, making travel or outdoor activities difficult.

A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Motorists should be prepared for slippery road conditions and limited visibility. Caution should be used while driving.

Jan CarterJan Carter, 62, of Leesburg, passed away at 9:55 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015 in Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne.

She was born November 23, 1952 in Warsaw, to F. D. “Mouse” and Mary Beth (Light) Leake.

She was a lifetime Kosciusko County, resident. She was united in marriage to Theodore “Ted” Carter in October of 1981 in Goshen.

She was formerly employed by Explorer Van as director of purchasing, Haimbaugh, Inc. as vice president, Applied Team Technologies as president and co-owner, Proprietor of Leesburg Collectibles and former Leesburg Town Clerk. She was a member of the S.A.L. Auxiliary, Post No. 49, Warsaw.

Survivors include her husband Ted Carter of Leesburg; daughter Lara (spouse John) Ryan of Warsaw; brothers Kim (spouse Linda) Leake of Sholow, Ariz., and Rodney Leake of Pierceton; nephews Derrick, Austin and Ethan; nieces Ameila and Shoshannah; grand-nephews Ian, Jayden and Milo and a grand niece Taliah.

Calling hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, at the McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m.

Pastor Mike Beasley will officiate the services. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.

Oscar L. Weaver

Oscar L WeaverOscar L. Weaver, 90, of Bremen passed away on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at Pilgrim Manor in Plymouth.

He was born on Sept. 15, 1924, to Joseph and Jennie (Warren) Weaver in Nappanee. Oscar married Janet Y. Farrington on June 13, 1942.

Weaver honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Herrmann DD532. He was very proud of his service and was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. Oscar retired from Mutschler Brothers Co. in Nappanee after working there for many years.

He is survived by a daughter, Diana K. (James E.) Hawkins, and a son, Roger A. Weaver, both of Bremen. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Janet.

Friends may call on from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at the Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the funeral home. Pastor Jaree Kratzer will officiate.Memorial contributions may be given to the Bremen Church of God.


NWS Issues Weather Statement

The National Weather Service Northern Indiana issued a special weather statement and hazardous outlook this morning for the area, including Kosciusko County, for a winter weather outlook for accumulating snow and bitterly cold wind chills.

Other counties included are LaPorte, St. Joseph, Elkhart, LaGrange, Steuben, Noble, DeKalb, Stark, Pulaski, Marshall, Fulton, Whitley, Allen and further south.

NWS states the light mix of rain and snow, causing slippery road conditions, will become all snow this afternoon with 1 inch to 3 inches of snow expected by this evening.

Several inches of snow are possible Monday night followed by additional lake effect snow Tuesday through Friday. Snowfall amounts of 4 inches to 7 inches are expected by Tuesday morning.

Wind chills may become dangerously cold during the middle of the week as air temperatures fall below zero. Wind chills between 15 below and 25 below zero are expected Tuesday night through early Thursday

Winter Storm Watch Issued Through Tuesday

The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has issued a winter storm watch, which is in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday morning. The watch includes LaGrange, Noble, DeKalb, Kosciusko and Whitley counties.

Snow is expected to move into the area Monday evening and continue into Tuesday morning. Snowfall amounts of 3 inches to 6 inches are likely with between 5 inches and 8 inches possible. The location where the heavier snowfall amounts occur remains uncertain which has prompted the watch.

Remember a watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations.

Temperatures will be in the single digits and teens during this event. Winds will likely be around 10 miles per hour.

NWS states snowfall rates up to an inch per hour may occur Monday night. Heavy accumulations will be possible with visibility reduced to one-fourth mile or less at times. Roads will become snow covered, slick and hazardous.

Unlawful Residential Entry Leads To Pursuit, Accident, Arrest

Ryan Paul Nicholas Rautenberg, 27, Warsaw, has been booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on felony charges of fleeing/resisting law enforcement and operating a vehicle while intoxicated following a report of a residential entry.

At 1:12 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, Warsaw Police responded to a Market Street address for a subject breaking into the occupied residence. The victim advised her ex-husband kicked in the front door and battered her in front of their two young children.

Upon police arrival, the suspect had left in a vehicle. The victim told police it appeared her ex-husband was extremely intoxicated.

Warsaw Police issued an attempt to locate on the suspect and his vehicle.

At approximately, 1:24 a.m. a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputy located Rautenberg’s vehicle near US 30 and CR 250E. The deputy attempted a traffic stop but Rautenberg fled westbound on US 30, in his vehicle, at high speeds. A pursuit ensued on US 30 reaching speeds up to 100 miles per hour. Additional police units safely deployed tire deflation devices near US 30 and SR 15.

The vehicle continued westbound until a tire began to shred near Fox Farm Road. Rautenberg stopped his vehicle for a brief moment and then took off again northbound on Fox Farm Road again at high speeds. At the T-intersection of Fox Farm Road and CR 300N, the vehicle lost control, struck a tree and collided with the first pursuing Winona Lake Police vehicle.

police chase sceneNeither Rautenberg nor the Winona Lake officer were injured, but Rautenberg was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital by MTEMS to be medically cleared and for alcohol testing. Once cleared, he was transported to the Kosciusko County
Jail.

Additional charges of felony residential entry by force and felony domestic battery in the presence of minor children are pending. He is being held on a $2,000 surety bond.

Police agencies assisting were; Warsaw Police, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Winona Lake Police Department and Indiana State Police.

Winter Weather Advisory For Snow

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 10 p.m. today until 10 a.m. Tuesday, for Kosciusko County as well as Whitley, Allen, Huntington, Wells, and Adams counties among others.

Snow is expected to overspread the area toward mid evening and continue into early Tuesday morning. Snowfall of 3 inches to 5 inches are likely. The highest amounts are expected south of US 30 and near Lake Michigan. Snowfall rates up to one-half inch per hour may occur overnight with visibilities reduced to one-half mile or less.

Roads will become snow covered, slick and hazardous, will cause travel difficulties. Motorists should be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities.

Additionally bitterly cold air will continue to spread across the area today. Light lake effect snow will gradually diminish today as system snow begins tonight.
