SYRACUSE — A Goshen teen suffered head injuries after being struck while standing next to the road following a two-vehicle accident. The accident was reported at 4:45 a.m. today, Thursday, July 21. It happened at CR 33 north of CR 50, north of Syracuse.

Lisa Helmuth, 18, Goshen, was standing off the road on the west side, near a driveway on CR 33 north of CR 50, when she was struck as a result of a two-vehicle accident at that location. She was taken to IU Health Goshen with head injuries.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department reports Rex Lewallen, 51, Syracuse, was northbound on CR 33 behind a vehicle driven by Myron Borkholder, 18, Nappanee. Burkholder was turning west into a drive near where Helmuth was standing when his vehicle was struck.

Police say Lewallen improperly passed the Borkholder vehicle on the left, as it was turning into the drive. Lewallen’s truck struck the driver side rear bumper of Borkholder’s vehicle, pushing it west and hitting Helmuth.

Lewallen suffered a laceration to the nose and Borkholder complained of pain to the left shoulder. Both refused medical treatment.

Lewallen was cited for improper passing on the left and driving while suspended.
