According to Warsaw Police, officers went with DCF officials for a welfare check on a child. Once authorities were inside the home, the officer saw drug items in plain view and asked Gatke and her son, Hamman, for permission to search the home. Consent was given and police located drug paraphernalia and drug products.
When the officer went outside the residence to field test the alleged drug product, Schlemmer was observed exiting the back of the residence. Schlemmer failed to follow police commands to stop and following a short foot pursuit he was apprehended. Police found a glass smoking device, known to be used with drugs, in his possession. Schlemmer told authorities after he saw police inside the home, he fled, knowing he had outstanding warrants.
