KOSCIUSKO COUNTY —Kejuan Deshawn Leek, 22, 4030 Shawnee Drive, Goshen, has been arrested and charged with vandalism at Pisgah Boardwalk, property owned by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. He is being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on no bond.
According to information filed by the Law Enforcement Division of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, conservation officers responded to a report of vandalism occurring at the wildlife area May 1, 2016. Witnesses told officers there was fresh graffiti on benches and two individuals were observed walking across a beaver dam into the woods.
An officer found two names and crosses spray painted on the boardwalk. The officer crossed the beaver dam to locate the individuals and saw three males and two females walking toward him, one carrying a can of spray paint. When the officer identified himself, the individual with the can of spray paint put the can in a jacket pocket.
The officer advised them they were in a wildlife refuge area and were not allowed off the boardwalk. He asked them to go back to the entrance to speak with them. He spoke with two of the males about being in a wildlife refuge area and the fresh graffiti and asked for the can of spray paint. One of the individuals gave the officer a can of black spray paint from the pocket of a jacket that belonged to Leek. That individual told police he had tossed the can of white spray paint in the woods on his way back to the entrance.
All five individuals were interviewed separately. Officers received several different stories indicating various individuals. While talking with Leek, he confirmed he saw one of the other males and a female doing some graffiti on the boardwalk. He also advised he was responsible for some of the graffiti on trees in the wildlife refuge.
Those present were all given citations for violation of posted signs – being at the boardwalk during closed hours and foot traffic in the wildlife refuge. Leek and a male and female were also cited for criminal mischief.
