Frank Sherman Nixon, 97, of North Manchester, died at 3:20 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, at Peabody Health Care Center in North Manchester.
He was born Jan. 5, 1918, in North Manchester, to Harry R. and Nora (Thompson) Nixon.
Frank was a graduate of Central High School, in North Manchester. He was an Army Air Corps veteran, serving during World War II, as part of the 474th Fighter Group. He served in the European Theater, and was in England on D-Day. After the war, he served as a Navy reserve.
He married Vada Lee King in North Manchester, on Sept. 15, 1947.
Frank was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 286, and the Izaak Walton League. He enjoyed golfing, reading, painting, refinishing furniture, ice fishing, and was an avid rock collector. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife: Vada Lee Nixon, North Manchester; four children: Cheryl Nixon, Plymouth; Paula (Bruce) Thoma, Valparaiso; Noel (Loretta) Nixon, Logansport; Eric (Melissa) Nixon, Pendleton; 13 grandchildren: Andrew Thoma; Adam Thoma; Claire Thoma, all of Valparaiso; Aaron (Heidi) Nixon, Fortville; Andrew (Quirsten) Nixon, Crown Point; Sarah Nixon; and Stephen (Kira) Nixon, both of Logansport; Joseph (Monica) Nixon, Apex, N.C.; Jonathan Nixon, Marshalltown, Iowa; Anna Nixon, Chicago, Ill.; Tyler Nixon; Christopher Nixon; and Allison Nixon, all of Pendleton; three great-grandchildren: Evan Nixon, Apex; Carter Nixon, Logansport; and Andra Nixon, Crown Point.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; two sisters; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Peabody Chapel, North Manchester, with Rev. Sue Babovec officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester. Friends may call one hour to the service at Peabody.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the North Manchester Public Library.
