U-Turn Concerns Discussed At Traffic Safety Meeting

WARSAW — Public concern over U-turns being made at Parker Street and Husky Trail was a topic of discussion during the Warsaw Traffic Safety Commission meeting Wednesday, Aug. 5.

A concrete barrier on Parker Street, prohibiting motorist from turning left out of the private street of two businesses may result in potential signage being placed on the property. The signage would direct motorist to US 30 without making U-turns. Many motorist are turning right and then making U-turns at the intersection of Parker and Husky Trail, causing reported near miss collisions.

Lt. Kip Shuter noted, to the disbelief of several, that unless posted U-turns are not illegal.

During the discussion it was pointed out there was an exit from the business onto Patterson Road but due to the congestion of the parking lot, many are not driving around the building to that exit. Commission members suggested putting directional signs on the property and on Menard’s property indicating the way back to US 30.

The commission was given an update on the Market Street project by James Emans, city engineer. He reported the majority of the work between Bronson and Colfax has been completed. Work is continuing east of that location.

Traffic will be limited until the project is completed. A slight problem arose Tuesday evening when traffic signs were removed in the construction area. Temporary signs have been erected to control traffic.

Emans noted a flooding problem at Johnson has hopefully been solved. It was found mats to prevent erosion were placed over storm drains, while it kept debris from getting into the storm drains, it also kept water. The mats have been removed and replaced with other materials. He noted if this did not work, there could possibly be a pipe capacity issue. But it is not believed to be the case.

During other business:

  • Stop signs will be added on Anchorage Point, near Goodwill.
  • Concern was expressed again about truck traffic on Market Street with a request to see if No Thru Truck signs can be installed.
  • An inquiry was made if there was an update on stop signs in alleys. No report was available.
  • A request was made for a solution of vehicles blocking traffic at Detroit and Market streets and Detroit Street and Winona Avenue.
  • Temporary sign or extra patrols were requested in the area of Fribley Field on Market Street, due to the large number of participants in the football league practices and games. The parking for the field’s use is across the road in parking lots for the church and a chiropractor’s office. It was noted permanent safety lighting could be added in that area with the INDOT project for that portion.
